News : Rescue at 24hr yacht race
Southport Lifeboat have been providing cover for this years West Lancashire Yacht Club 24hr race by having the stations Inshore Rescue Boat available on the lake and providing additional crew for the clubs rescue boats. Mark and Paul Hesketh pictured said they were dealing with capsized yachts every few minutes and that this was good training for the crew members.
Just 2 minutes from the end of the 24 hr race, the IRB was called to a casualty in the water with suspected broken ribs. The lifeboat helmsman decided to put one crew member in the water, and to transfer the casualty to the side whilst he was still in the water. This was done to prevent further injuries to the casualty from transferring him into the boat.
Whilst the casualty was being transferred, the boat crew requested an ambulance via race control, they also radioed Southport RNLI Lifeguards to attend with a spinal board.
Once the lifeguards arrived, the spinal board was placed under the casualty and used to remove him from the water, then into the car park behind the Southport Theatre complex.
The casualty was handed over to the ambulance personnel and despatched to the hospital.
