News : Save Liverpool Coastguard
As some of will know the Coastguard is undergoing a refom by the government, see this link to view the consultation documents.
Liverpool Coastguard is the local Marine Rescue Coordination Centre, they coordinate sea and coastal search and rescue for a large part of the Irish Sea including the Southport area. The UK Government has proposed the closure of Liverpool Coastguard. This will result in the loss of vital local knowledge and a reduction in the efficiency of rescuing people in difficulty along our coastline and at sea. We have been asked by the staff at Liverpool Coastguard to post the following concerning the closure of the station.
As the only Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre on the west coast of England, the men and women of Liverpool Coastguard are responsible for keeping you, your family, your sea, and your shoreline safe.
From the Point of Ayr in North Wales to the Mull of Galloway in Southwest Scotland, the four main lakes in the Lake District, and the waters around the Isle of Man, the coastguard officers at Liverpool coordinate the response to many and varied emergencies:
Sinking and broken-down or drifting vessels
People cut-off by the tide
Pollution at sea and shore
Civil emergency response (flooding etc)
Assisting other emergency services
This list is not definitive, however for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the experienced, dedicated, and professional staff at Liverpool Coastguard are there to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.
But if the UK Government get their way, not for much longer.
We have until the 6th October 2011 to change the Government's decision to close Liverpool Coastguard. Please sign our petition online or lookout for our petition in many places throughout the region.
