Southport Rescue Crew Complete Basic Search Technicians
Course
On the 26th 27th and 28th June, Neil Rothwell, Paul Hesketh, and Mike Almond attended and passed there ALSAR(Association of Lowland Search and Rescue) Basic Search Technicians Course.
This was a first for the Trust. The aim being to improve the levels of skill at beach and links area searches. As these are being an increasing area of our work. Along with the lifeboat and quad call outs we are being asked to assist in missing person searches more often.
The course was held in Warrington and ran by Cheshire Search and Rescue under the umbrella of ALSAR and Cheshire Police Search advisor.
The course was aimed at improving team member’s skills, understanding and experience of land based search and rescue,
It was based around three different search techniques these being:-
Hasty Search
This provides an immediate show of effort, helping to define the search area, requires a quick response and clue consciousness is critical.
Efficient Search
This brings into play a systematic search using critical separation, usually assigned into segments the criteria of this search is efficiency.
Thorough Search
This is a closed grid search that may be used when looking for crime scene evidence.
We were shown how to manage available resources to the best and analyse terrain to asses hazards.
The course also went into the predictable behaviour of missing people from children aged 1-3 years to the elderly and the despondent.
First aid and personal responsibility of care for the missing person.
We also learnt about crime scene preservation and the importance of note taking
The entire course was an asset to the crew who participated.
A massive thanks to the volunteers of Cheshire SAR team, for allowing the three of us to crash on their course.
Cheshire SAR team have offered to run the course for the rest of the wet and shore crew of Southport Rescue over the next few months.
We will also be training with them on and off the water putting into practice all the foreseeable scenarios that we can predict.
I hope that this is just the start of a close relationship between Southport Rescue and Cheshire Search and Rescue, as the old saying goes two heads are always better than one.
As you may already know their dog team is helping with William’s training and two of their members the have already been on a mud rescue exercise with us.
