News : Senate begins work on Southport Lifeboat Station

Work has begun on the completion of the new Southport Lifeboat station by Senate Group, a local Liverpool based mechanical, electrical and construction company. Working closely with the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust, the registered charity who run the Lifeboat station, the team at Senate will carry out the completion of the build.

The works will take place over the next few months, with completion expected in late-summer 2021 and will include internal mechanical and electrical works, as well as external cladding and construction works, including a full groundwork package.

Kiera Vogel, Co-Owner and Director at Senate Group commented: “To be able to begin work on a building which is such a vital part of the local community, is hugely rewarding for Senate. The completion of the Lifeboat station is an exciting prospect, and it means the crucial services the team at the Lifeboat Trust provides will remain in Southport for many years to come. Continuing to be a pillar of the local community and more importantly continuing to save lives.”

The Southport Offshore Rescue Trust who run the station are completely independent of the RNLI and they rely solely on donations and fundraising to keep afloat, with an average of £60,000 needed each year to keep the lifeboat running, as well as providing vital land-based search and rescue services along the Sefton coastline.

The new station replaces the old lifeboat house nearby that was built in 1886 and used by the Southport Offshore Rescue trust since 1988. The crew are all unpaid volunteers who are on call 24/7 and have helped well over 400 people since forming.

Nicola Goldup, Trustee Director of the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust adds:

"We're delighted to be able to progress the project to a completion with Senate and look forward in delivering an iconic building for our seafront. The Lifeboat Station will serve as an operational base and training centre for all our crew and lifesaving equipment for generations to come.

“The Trust would like to thank the people of Southport for their support and understanding during the construction of the building and cannot wait to welcome everyone who has helped us to the new Lifeboat Station soon.”
